My family just bought a new car. A black SUV. We owned it three days before I drove it into the city for an appointment. I parked it one block away from my destination, which I neglected to take note of. I recalled that the street was one way and there was parking on both sides. That seemed to be enough of identifying factor.
When I left to return to my car, I did not expect that there would be very few identifying factors to the car itself. It’s not until you can’t find your black SUV on a city street that you realize that 50% of the cars in America are black SUVs. I become totally disoriented, walking up and down and round and round in very pointy high heels looking for my car that was so new, I would barely recognize it in my own driveway. Panic set in. Would I have to call for help and what would exactly would that help be anyway?
After about 20 minutes of stalking all the black SUVs in the area, I decided to start over. I went back to the building I came from, cleared my head and let my innate memory lead my blistered feet step by step.
And I found it. One block away. The black SUV with the temporary dealer advertising plate on the front. (Now why didn’t I think of looking for that unique identifying factor before?) How many times had I passed it and not noticed it?
Stress can fill our minds and empty our thoughts, leading us the wrong way and miss the good things that are right in front of us. Work stress may lead us to spend less time with family and friends. Internal worries may cause us to doubt ourselves and hold us back. Our relationships and self-worth suffers.
Stress can cause us to not recognize those God-given gifts that are ours if we recognize them. We may not pay attention to the important people in our lives. Lost in our tense-filled, run-on thoughts, we may walk right by our blessings without a second thought.
But they are still there, waiting for us to claim them. We just need to take a step back, clear our minds and connect with God that is already inside of us and let the spirit lead the way.
